Why Teach Weather in Preschool?
Weather is one of the easiest science topics for young children to understand because they experience it every day.
Learning about weather helps children:
- Build observation skills
- Develop descriptive vocabulary
- Understand seasonal changes
- Learn how weather affects clothing and activities
- Practice making predictions
- Notice patterns over time
Even simple conversations like, “Is it sunny today?” or “What should we wear if it rains?” help children connect learning to real life.
My Favorite Ways to Teach Weather
After teaching preschool for many years, I’ve found that children learn weather concepts best when they experience them in meaningful, hands-on ways. Here are a few simple, effective activities I use in my classroom that you can try at home or in your own classroom.
1. Circle Time Weather Talk
Every morning, we gather together to talk about the weather.
I ask a couple of students to step outside the classroom and observe the weather, while the rest of us stay inside and look out the window. When everyone comes back together, we compare observations and talk about what we notice.
Questions I like to ask include:
- What does the sky look like?
- Is the sun shining?
- Do you see clouds?
- Is the wind blowing?
- What clothes should we wear today?
This simple daily routine sparks conversation and helps children begin noticing weather patterns naturally.

2. Create a Weather Chart
During circle time, we also keep a weekly weather chart.
Each day, a child adds a weather picture to represent that day’s weather. By the end of the week, we look back together and talk about what we observed.
Questions might include:
- Which type of weather happened the most?
- Did it rain more than once?
- Were there any sunny days?
Children love being the “weather helper,” and the chart gives them a visual way to recognize patterns over time.
3. Sing Weather Songs and Play Movement Games
Music always makes learning more memorable!
We sing weather-themed songs about sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy, stormy, and snowy days while adding fun movements.
Some favorites include pretending to:
- spin like the wind
- splash in puddles
- stretch toward the sun
- float like clouds
- shiver in the snow
These songs and games keep children actively engaged while reinforcing important weather vocabulary.
4. Throw a Weather or Season Party
One of my students’ favorite traditions is our weather-themed learning parties.
For our Sunny Day Party, children come dressed in swimsuits, hats, and sunglasses. We head outside for water play, bubble activities, and sunshine-themed games.
For our Rainy Day Party, everyone wears rain boots, raincoats, and brings umbrellas. We pretend to splash through puddles, read rainy-day stories, and practice dressing for wet weather.
These themed celebrations make learning incredibly memorable. They encourage imaginative play while helping children understand how weather influences the clothes we wear and the activities we enjoy.

Extend the Learning
Pair these worksheets with additional hands-on activities such as:
- Weather flashcards
- Weather sorting cards
- Daily weather graphing
- Weather-themed sensory bins
- Cotton ball cloud crafts
- Rain cloud experiments
- Kite-making activities
- Sun catchers
- Seasonal books
- Weather observation journals
The more children can see, touch, sing, move, and talk about weather, the more meaningful their learning becomes.
