K is for King Art and Craft

My preschoolers love playing kings and queens in the dramatic play area. With a crown and a cape, they instantly transform themselves into royalties.

Such is the power of play! Particularly dramatic play.

That’s why I highly encourage dramatic play in my classroom. It encourages creativity and promotes imagination.

In addition, role playing also fosters independence because children need little to no assistance from adults while playing.

However, as adults we can do some steps to ensure that our little ones maximise the benefits of dramatic play:

  • Provide varied materials as props
  • Join them from time to time as they play but let them take the lead
  • Give them plenty of activities and avenue where they can draw ideas from (e.g. storytelling, field trips, center time, etc…)
  • Establish and enforce rules so everyone will feel safe and happy

Aside from encouraging role playing games in the classroom, I also prepare easy craft activities for my students to help them express themselves creatively.

This alphabet art is one good example as it targets the following learning objectives:

  • Master the letter K through a visual cue (image of a king) and an auditory cue (beginning sound of the word king)
  • Develop fine motor skills
  • Foster creativity and imagination
