Wild animals are always a fascinating topic for young learners. From the majestic lion to the playful monkey, kids are naturally drawn to these amazing creatures.

That’s why introducing the world of wild animals in the classroom or at home is such a fantastic way to spark curiosity while teaching foundational skills.

Why Teach About Wild Animals?

Wild animals are not only fun and interesting to learn about, but they also open the door to so many teachable moments.

From discussing animals and their young,  their natural habitats to understanding how they live and survive, kids gain a broader perspective of the world around them.

In my classroom, I’ve always loved teaching about wild animals because the topic naturally excites the kids. They eagerly share their knowledge of different animals, mimic animal sounds, and ask endless questions.

It’s a theme that encourages active participation and keeps young learners engaged.

How I Teach Wild Animals in the Classroom

Over the years, I’ve found a few tried-and-tested strategies to make learning about wild animals both fun and educational:

  1. Storybooks About Wild Animals
Reading animal-themed books is a great way to introduce the topic. One of my students’ favorites is Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae. After reading, we have fun discussions about the animals in the story.
  2. Animal Movement Games
One of my go-to activities is an “animal movement” game. I call out an animal, and the kids move like that animal—for example, stomping like an elephant or hopping like a kangaroo. This activity gets their bodies moving and helps them understand how different animals behave.
  3. Using Visual Aids
I always have pictures or flashcards of wild animals handy. Kids love pointing out animals they recognize, and it’s a great opportunity to introduce new vocabulary.
  4. Incorporating Worksheets
After all the hands-on activities, I use worksheets to reinforce what we’ve learned. The kids love working on these, especially coloring pictures of their favorite wild animals. Worksheets are a great way to practice skills like counting, matching, and tracing while sticking to the wild animals theme.

  • Make It Hands-On: Pair the worksheets with hands-on activities. For example, after completing the counting worksheet, use toy animals to practice counting together.
  • Encourage Creativity: Let kids color the pictures after completing the activities. It’s a simple way to make the learning process even more enjoyable.
