Why Teach About Farm Animals?

Farm animals are an excellent starting point for preschool learning. They’re easy for kids to recognize, and talking about them provides a natural way to incorporate sounds, vocabulary, and even life skills like kindness to animals.

In my preschool classroom, I find that the farm animals theme always sparks joy and excitement among the children.

They love to share their own stories about trips to a farm, or animals and their young they’ve seen in books and on TV. This topic is so relatable that it creates a perfect gateway for meaningful learning experiences.

How I Teach Farm Animals in the Classroom

Teaching farm animals is one of my favorite units because it’s so versatile. Here are some tried-and-true activities I use in my classroom to introduce and reinforce this topic:

  1. Animal Sounds Game
I start by making farm animal sounds and asking the kids to guess which animal I’m pretending to be. For example, I’ll say “Moo!” and wait for them to shout, “Cow!” It’s simple, interactive, and always gets a giggle or two.
  2. Farm Animal Sorting
I provide the kids with toy farm animals and sorting mats. The mats might have labels like “Big Animals” and “Small Animals” or categories like “Barn Animals” and “Pond Animals.” Sorting activities like this help strengthen their critical thinking and organizational skills.
  3. Art and Crafts
A favorite project is making paper plate farm animals. Whether it’s a fluffy sheep made from cotton balls or a colorful rooster with feather cutouts, the kids love these hands-on crafts. I also make sure to have farm animals coloring pages available to further reinforce creativity.
  4. Farm Songs and Stories
Classics like Old MacDonald Had a Farm and picture books such as Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type are staples during this unit. Sometimes I also use farm animals flashcards to tell stories or as props when we’re signing. I find that incorporating music and storytelling makes learning even more engaging.
  5. Visual Cues
Decorating the classroom is also one way that I reinforce animals theme. I post animals flashcards where children can easily see them (and hopefully read them) and animals and their homes posters are displayed near the blocks area for inspiration.
  6. Worksheets to Reinforce Learning
After all the singing, sorting, and crafting, we use preschool worksheets to bring it all together. Worksheets provide structured practice that helps kids solidify what they’ve learned while giving them a sense of accomplishment.
