Walking around nature is a refreshing way to learn. And it’s one of the reasons why my preschoolers love going on nature walks.

Another reason why I love doing my classes outside is because nature is a natural and impressive classroom. I don’t have to prepare anything (well, except maybe for bug sprays.)

All I have to do is act on and reply to what my students find interesting and then connect it with our learning objectives in the classroom.

Like in the case of butterflies. We have plenty of butterflies in our school garden. And you are right! I have used these cute insects as a springboard to a couple of my lessons such as life cycle and the letter Bb.

After connecting our nature experience with our classroom lesson, I then reinforce my students’ learnings with art and craft activities.

One example is this easy and colourful butterfly craft.

This children art and craft is great for the following reasons:

  • Master the letter B through a visual cue (image of a butterfly) and auditory cue (beginning sound for the word butterfly)
  • Develop hand and wrist muscles
  • Foster imagination and creativity

Teacher’s Note:

As you do your nature walk, encourage your child to be attentive to details.

In the case of butterflies, ask your child what colors, patterns, and/or shapes she sees. This attention to detail will translate to better art work in the classroom, not to mention a great addition to her character.
