CVC Words Search and Color Worksheets

Free Search and Color CVC Words Worksheets

In this post, I’m excited to share a fantastic and engaging activity to help our little learners master their reading skills – Search and Color CVC Words worksheets. These activities are perfect for making learning fun and interactive for kindergarteners, ensuring they build a strong foundation in reading.

My students love playing hide and seek. that’s why I thought of making preschool worksheets that follow the same idea. They have to read the CVC words and look for the corresponding pictures then color them. This is a fun way for them to practice reading CVC words.

What Are CVC Words?

As children practice blending these sounds, they gradually become more confident reading simple words independently.

CVC stands for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant.

These are simple three-letter words made up of a consonant, a short vowel, and another consonant.

Some examples include:

cat – dog – bat – pig – sun – hen

CVC words are often among the first words children learn to decode because each sound can be clearly heard and blended together.

For example:

/c/ + /a/ + /t/ → cat

Why Search and Color CVC Activities?

This gives them a reason to slow down and pay attention to each word rather than rushing through the page.

Young children often enjoy learning activities that feel like a game. That’s one reason I like Search and Color worksheets.

Instead of simply reading a list of CVC words, children have to look carefully, find the matching picture, and connect the word they read with its meaning.

Benefits of Search and Color CVC Worksheets

Practice decoding
Children read the CVC word before searching for its matching picture.

Strengthen visual discrimination
Searching for a specific picture encourages children to look carefully at the details.

Connect words with meaning
Children practice understanding that the word they decode represents a real object.

Develop fine motor skills
Coloring gives children additional practice with pencil and crayon control.

Make reading practice enjoyable
The search-and-find element turns a simple worksheet into a playful challenge.

Read, Find, and Color CVC Words

One reason I created this activity was because my students loved playing hide-and-seek. I thought, why not bring that same idea into our phonics practice?

Instead of hiding themselves, the pictures are hiding among the words. Children have to read the CVC word, remember what it means, and then search the page for the matching picture.

It turns a simple reading exercise into a little treasure hunt.

How to Use the Search and Color CVC Worksheets

Step 1: Review the CVC Words

Before starting, review a few CVC words your child already knows.

For example:

cat – dog – pig – sun – bed

Have them say the sounds and blend each word.

Step 2: Read the Word

Ask your child to read one CVC word on the worksheet.

Encourage them to sound it out rather than guessing from the pictures.

Step 3: Search for the Matching Picture

Now comes the fun part!

Have your child search the page for the picture that matches the word they just read.

Step 4: Color the Picture

Once they find the correct picture, let them color it.

Step 5: Read the Words Again

When the worksheet is finished, go back and read the CVC words together.

This gives children another opportunity to practice the words they’ve just learned.awareness and boosts their confidence.

⭐ Teacher Nessy’s Tip

If your child is struggling to find the picture, don’t immediately point it out. Ask them to read the word again and think about what the word means. This encourages them to connect decoding → meaning → picture instead of simply matching by guesswork.
