Children are born curious. They ask a lot of questions. And so it’s not surprising when you suddenly end up talking about a subject that’s not in the original lesson plan.

Just like when we ended up doing a science experiment after discussing about dinosaurs.

The children wanted to know how the dinosaurs got extinct. And so even though a volcano experiment wasn’t part of the plan, we did one the next day.

It was such a fun lesson. And easy, too! Since the children were excited about volcanoes and dinosaurs, there was no need for other warm-ups or lesson starters. We just dove right in!

I had fun watching their faces lit up as our make-shift volcano started to explode and spew “lava”. They were so attentive as I explained to them how hot real lava is and so they quickly understood how dinosaurs got extinct.

Since they’re still very fascinated with volcanoes the next day, we worked on a volcano-themed art and related it with the letter of the day. Very timely, indeed!

This alphabet art targets the following learning objectives:

  • Master the letter V through a visual cue (image of a volcano) and an auditory cue (beginning sound of the word volcano)
  • Develop fine motor skills
  • Encourage creativity and imagination
